Karen Winterich named inaugural Gerald I. Susman Professor in Sustainability

December 11, 2020

UNIVERSITY PARK — Penn State Smeal College of Business Dean Charles H. Whiteman has announced the appointment of Karen Winterich as the inaugural Gerald I. Susman Professor in Sustainability.

Winterich, a professor in the Department of Marketing, conducts research in the area of consumer behavior, with much of her work examining how consumers’ social identities influence charitable giving as well as (im)moral and sustainable behavior.

After earning a bachelor’s in information management and analysis from Shippensburg University and a Ph.D. in marketing from the University of Pittsburgh, Winterich joined the marketing faculty at Texas A&M University. She accepted a position on the Smeal faculty in 2010.

“Karen has been a valued and respected member of our faculty for a decade. Through her insightful research and inspiring teaching methods, she has earned the respect of her peers in Smeal, as well as those throughout academia. This is a well-earned honor for Karen,” Whiteman said.

The professorship will provide Winterich with the resources needed to contribute and further her contributions to teaching, research, and public service.

The Susman Professorship is named for its benefactor, Gerry Susman, Klein Professor Emeritus in Smeal’s Department of Management and Organization.
