Newly redesigned Penn State Smeal Executive MBA provides more options, flexibility

October 3, 2017

The Penn State Smeal College of Business has redesigned its Philadelphia-based Executive MBA Program to provide more options and increased flexibility to its students.

Under the new design, students will now engage in residential instruction every other weekend over only a 17-month span, down from 21 months previously. The program is based at the Chubb Hotel & Conference Center in Lafayette Hill.

The intensive core curriculum has been enhanced and expanded. It is complemented by new optional classes. All graduates receive a concentration in strategic leadership led by Smeal’s Department of Management and Organization, which has been ranked among the top 5 in North America.

The program will retain its unique faculty-in-residence feature, which allows for deeper student-faculty relationships and time to work individually on real-world problems and projects.

“Our program is priced lower than other programs in the region and delivers superior value and return on investment,” said Jason Stieg, managing director of the Penn State Smeal MBA Program. “Students have greater demands on their time and insist on a program that’s nimble and able to be customized. This new design meets those needs.”

The 17-month time frame means a student can start the program in August and complete the requirements by the the following December. After graduation in May, students can select from several options to customize their degree.

Students can choose to complete an optional entrepreneurship or an optional global immersion, or both, from January through graduation in May. Students also have three years to complete one of five optional Smeal-led online graduate certificates, offered through Penn State World Campus:

  • Business Analytics
  • Marketing Analytics
  • Corporate Innovation and Entrepreneurship
  • Corporate Accounting Foundations
  • Supply Chain Management

The Penn State Smeal Executive MBA is well suited for a wide range of professionals, including: those in mid- to upper-level management moving into strategic leadership positions; those already in a management position who would like to polish their skills for a higher level of performance; and those looking to accelerate their career.

“The new program has a more rigorous, flexible, and focused curriculum to meet the needs of business leaders,” said Lou Gattis, clinical professor of finance, faculty director for the program, and a central figure in the redesign. “Unlike other programs, all Smeal courses are delivered 100 percent face to face by the same faculty teaching in the full-time program.”
