Smeal Welcomes Ten New Faculty Members

Ten new faculty members have joined the Penn State Smeal College of Business this semester.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Ten new faculty members have joined the Penn State Smeal College of Business this semester. They are:

Andrew Carton
Assistant Professor of Management and Organization
Carton comes to Smeal after earning his Ph.D. in Business Administration from Duke University. His research primarily focuses on the challenges organizations and leaders face as they seek to manage the increasingly complex nature of behavior between groups (i.e., intergroup relations) and the varied goals of group members (i.e., goal systems). He teaches business ethics.

In addition to his Ph.D., Carton holds bachelor's degrees in Psychology and Political Science from Rutgers University.

N. Edward Coulson
Professor of Real Estate and King Fellow in Real Estate
Coulson, who is a professor of economics at Penn State, joins Smeal on a joint appointment with the College of Liberal Arts, where he has served on the economics faculty since 1984. His research focus is in the areas of housing economics, public economics, urban economics, regional economics, and econometrics. He teaches courses in urban economics, econometrics, sports economics, public finance, housing, and real estate markets.

Coulson holds a bachelor's degree in Economics from the University of California, Riverside, and a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California, San Diego.

D. Lance Ferris
Assistant Professor of Management and Organization
Ferris joins Smeal from Singapore Management University, where he served as assistant professor of organizational behavior and human resources since 2008. His research primarily focuses on motivation, investigating self-enhancement and self-verification, approach and avoidance, and self-determination motivation processes in organizations. His teaching interests are in organizational behavior and ethics.

Ferris holds a bachelor's degree from McMaster University and master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Waterloo.

Christoph Hinkelmann
Clinical Assistant Professor of Finance
Hinkelmann joins Smeal from Wake Forest University, where he served as visiting assistant professor of finance. He has also served on the faculties of Auburn University and Texas A&M University and spent five years combined as a vice president and portfolio manager at Allianz Global Investors Capital and Nicholas-Applegate Capital Management. Hinkelmann's teaching and research interests lie in capital markets, commercial banking, investments and portfolio management, and quantitative methods.

He holds bachelor's degrees in Economics and Mathematics from the University of Virginia and a Ph.D. in Business Administration from the University of Rochester.

Eelco Kappe
Assistant Professor of Marketing
Kappe comes to Smeal from Erasmus University in the Netherlands where he earned his Ph.D. in Marketing. His research interests are in market response models, marketing during and after negative events, and healthcare marketing. His primary teaching interest lies in marketing strategy.

In addition to his Ph.D., Kappe holds bachelor's and master's degrees in Econometrics from the Erasmus School of Economics in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

Yelena Larkin
Assistant Professor of Finance
Larkin joins Smeal from Cornell University, where she is a Ph.D. candidate in Finance. Prior to joining academia, Larkin held several positions in banking and finance, including at the Bank of Israel and the World Bank. Her teaching and research interests lie in the area of corporate finance.

In addition to her Ph.D., Larkin holds bachelor's degrees in Economics and Psychology, a master's degree in Financial Economics, and an M.B.A. from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel.

Vidya Mani
Assistant Professor of Supply Chain and Information Systems
Mani comes to Smeal from the University of North Carolina, where she earned her Ph.D. in Operations, Technology and Innovation Management. Her research and teaching is focused in the areas of retail operations, empirical research in operations management, and supply chain management.

In addition to her Ph.D., Mani holds a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, India, and a master's degree in Operations Management from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay.

Lisa O'Hara
Clinical Assistant Professor of Management and Organization
O'Hara joins Smeal from St. Francis University, where she served as assistant professor of business and human resource management since 2007. Prior to joining academia, O'Hara spent more than 15 years in a variety of human resources positions, culminating as vice president of organizational learning for a regional Pennsylvania bank. O'Hara's research interests lie in the use of social media in recruiting, virtual learning communities, and human resources management, which she will teach at Smeal.

O'Hara holds bachelor's degrees in Business and Education and a master's degree in business from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. in Instructional Design and Technology from the University of Pittsburgh.

Srikanth Paruchuri
Associate Professor of Management and Organization
Paruchuri comes to Smeal from the University of Florida, where he has served since 2004, most recently as associate professor of management. He has also served as a visiting assistant professor at Texas Tech University. Paruchuri's research focuses on the evolution of firm capabilities, technologies and industries, which he examines through diverse theoretical lenses including social networks, social movements and environmental jolts. His teaching interests are in the areas of strategy and innovation management.

Paruchuri holds a bachelor's degree in Computer Science from the National Institute of Technology, Warangal, India; a master's degree in International Business from the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, New Delhi; and master's and doctoral degrees in Management from Columbia University.

Shrihari Sridhar
Assistant Professor of Marketing
Sridhar joins Smeal from Michigan State University, where he served as assistant professor of marketing since 2009. His research involves the application of quantitative modeling techniques to strategic marketing problems. Specifically, he builds models that help quantify the effectiveness of the marketing-communication instruments (e.g. advertising, salesforce, investments) and investigates how to optimize the budget and allocation of the marketing-mix over managerially relevant planning horizons.

Sridhar holds a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from R.V. College of Engineering, Bangalore, India; a master's degree in Engineering Management from the Missouri University of Science and Technology; and a Ph.D. in Marketing from the University of Missouri.
