Purandeswari was appointed to her current post in January 2006. Previously, as a member of the Indian parliament since 2004, she spearheaded initiatives in agriculture, higher education, public health, science, and technology. An articulate speaker, Purandeswari has been nominated to several international delegations representing India and has spoken at numerous conferences, including at the White House Symposium on Literacy in 2008, organized by Laura Bush.
The daughter of Indian actor N.T. Rama Rao, Purandeswari holds a bachelor's degree in English Language and Literature from SIET College in Chennai. She also holds a diploma in Gemology from the Gemological Institute of India in Mumbai, and founded the Hyderabad Institute of Gem and Jewellery.
