Supply Chain Professor Receives Best Paper Honor From Business Horizons

The editorial board of "Business Horizons," the bimonthly journal of the Indiana University's Kelley School of Business, has chosen a paper co-authored by Christopher Craighead, assistant professor of supply chain management at Penn State's Smeal College of Business, for its 2008 Best Paper Award.

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA (January 22, 2009) – The editorial board of Business Horizons, the bimonthly journal of the Indiana University's Kelley School of Business, has chosen a paper co-authored by Christopher Craighead, assistant professor of supply chain management at Penn State's Smeal College of Business, for its 2008 Best Paper Award.

"Time Bandits: How They Are Created, Why They Are Tolerated, and What Can Be Done about Them," co-authored by Craighead with David Ketchen of Auburn University and M. Ronald Buckley of the University of Oklahoma, was recognized for being the 2008 paper that best meets the mission of Business Horizons.

According to the journal, the paper is a "timely, novel, provocative article that addresses how one of the most valuable of organizational resources, its human resources, is underutilized, why such misuse of employees' time is tolerated by management, and what can be done to rectify time banditry."

Further, the journal states that the authors "do a superb job of describing time bandits, they offer excellent insights for how to address the problem."

Craighead joined the Smeal faculty in 2008 from Auburn, where he served on the faculty since 2003, most recently as associate professor. His primary research interest is in the area of strategic sourcing/supply management and he currently teaches classes in strategic procurement.

Craighead holds a bachelor's degree and a master's degree from East Tennessee State University and a Ph.D. from Clemson University.
