UNIVERSITY PARK, PA (February 13, 2009) – Twenty-Seven Smeal College of Business MBA students traveled to Omaha, Neb., on Feb. 6 to spend the day with legendary investor Warren Buffett, chief executive officer of Berkshire Hathaway.
Their trip began with a morning tour of the largest furniture and home appliance store in the world, Nebraska Furniture Mart, a Berkshire Hathaway portfolio company. After the tour, the students made their way to Kiewit Plaza, the corporate headquarters of Berkshire. There, students were treated to Coca-Cola beverages—Berkshire owns 200 million shares of Coca-Cola, or roughly 8 percent—and a two-hour question-and-answer session with Buffett. Smeal students asked him questions regarding the markets and current economic conditions.
After the talk, Buffett treated the students to steaks and ice cream floats at Piccolo's restaurant. Following lunch, he allowed time to pose with the students in group and individual photos. At the end of the visit, he extended an invitation to the Smeal students to attend Berkshire Hathaway's annual shareholder meeting on May 2.
The Smeal trip to Omaha was part of a regular routine for Buffett, who occasionally hosts groups of MBA students from the country's leading business schools. Smeal MBAs hope to make another trip to Omaha in 2010.
