UNIVERSITY PARK, PA (April 30, 2009) – With television cameras rolling, a panel of leading business executives gathered at Penn State’s Smeal College of Business recently to discuss business trends and employment strategies for new college graduates with a live student audience.
The resulting one-hour television show, "The Economy and the Graduate," is scheduled to air at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 5, on the Big Ten Network. The show covers the executives' perspectives on the short-term economy and includes strategies and advice for recent graduates and students to secure employment during the national economic downturn.
During the program, undergraduate and MBA students from Smeal ask the panelists—Jim Clifton, chairman and CEO of Gallup Inc., Karen Peetz, senior executive vice president for The Bank of New York Mellon, and John Surma, chairman and CEO of U.S. Steel—questions such as whether to hire an employment consultant, how to weigh a salary offer versus health care and other benefits, and what activities to pursue while trying to land full-time employment.
From the significance of networking to the idea of becoming a specialist or entrepreneur in a field, the executives fielded a wide range of topics. The audience learned sound strategies—and sometimes heard conflicting perspectives—regarding their "brand" as an employable worker, the role of a good mentor, and the effects of setting lofty long-term goals.
Smeal will host a viewing of "The Economy and the Graduate" at 7 p.m. on May 5 in 124 Business Building.
