Real Estate Professor Honored Twice For Excellence

Abdullah Yavas, the William Elliott Professor of Business Administration at Penn State’s Smeal College of Business, was recently recognized as a Fellow of the Weimer School of Advanced Studies in Real Estate and Land Economics. He was also named Outstanding Editorial Board Member of the journal Real Estate Economics.

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA (March 25, 2005)—Abdullah Yavas, the William Elliott Professor of Business Administration at Penn State’s Smeal College of Business, was recently recognized as a Fellow of the Weimer School of Advanced Studies in Real Estate and Land Economics. He was also named Outstanding Editorial Board Member of the journal Real Estate Economics.

The Weimer School supports development and advancement in the field of real estate and land economics, and works to advance the careers of emerging scholars and leaders in the discipline. Each year, the school selects several faculty members from around the world as Fellows. The 2004-2005 class also includes representatives from DePaul University, University of Southern California, New York University, and the University of San Diego.

Published by the American Real Estate and Urban Economics Association, Real Estate Economics is considered to be the premier journal for real estate related topics. It has been published since 1973 and is the oldest academic journal concentrating on the real estate industry. Yavas was selected as Outstanding Editorial Board Member because of his dedicated service as a referee and the quality of his editorial reviews.

Since joining the Smeal faculty in 1992, Yavas has taught a variety of real estate topics including fundamentals, property valuation, and finance and investments at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

With expertise in financial contracting, agency problems, the economics of uncertainty, and experimental economics, Yavas is also research director of Smeal’s Institute for Real Estate Studies. He is an editorial board member of a variety of other publications including the Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics, Journal of Housing Economics, and Journal of Real Estate Research. He is also currently serving as an advisor to Turkey's Secretary of Treasury as that government works to become one of the first developing nations in the world to establish a mortgage system.
