Coyle Honored With Society Of Logistics Award

In recognition of his work developing logistics education, John Coyle, professor emeritus of supply chain and information systems at Penn State's Smeal College of Business, has been honored with the Eccles Medal from The International Society of Logistics (SOLE).

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA (October 25, 2004)—In recognition of his work developing logistics education, John Coyle, professor emeritus of supply chain and information systems at Penn State's Smeal College of Business, has been honored with the Eccles Medal from The International Society of Logistics (SOLE). Coyle is only the third individual to win the award, which traditionally is given to organizations or institutions.

After joining the Smeal faculty in 1961, Coyle played an active role in developing the logistics and transportation program at Penn State, and he was the first to teach a University course called business logistics. In the years since, Smeal has emerged as a leading business school for supply chain management education, annually earning top 10 graduate and undergraduate rankings in the discipline from U.S. News & World Report .

Coyle has published more than 100 articles on a variety of topics including logistics, marketing and manufacturing interfaces, and supply chain management. He now serves as president of CLSU Associates, a supply chain consulting firm that has counseled more than 300 companies around the world. During Coyle's Penn State career, he has received the Distinguished Lions Paw Award for Outstanding Service to Penn State and the Distinguished Service Award from the Council of Logistics Management, among many other accolades.

SOLE is a non-profit international professional society comprised of individuals organized to enhance the art and science of logistics technology, education, and management. There are more than 90 SOLE chapters in 50 countries around the world. Chapters conduct workshops with the purpose of providing its members opportunities to advance professionally.
