Advanced Manufacturing Forum To Discuss Lean Manufacturing Practices

With presentations from BAE Systems Controls, Exide Technologies, Magnivision, and Six Sigma Academy, the 54th meeting of the Advanced Manufacturing Forum will focus on the concept of lean manufacturing. Presented by the Center for the Management of Technological and Organizational Change (CMTOC) at Penn State’s Smeal College of Business, the forum will take place on Oct. 30-31 at The Penn Stater Conference Hotel near the University Park campus.

Levi Strauss is shutting down its last US production facility in San Antonio. RJ Reynolds employment in Winston-Salem is down 75 percent compared to 20 years ago. Michigan, the home of the Big 3 auto makers, has lost 170,000 jobs.

Smeal College Faculty Ranks Among Nation's Best In Research Productivity

In a new study of research productivity of faculty members at 51 leading U.S. business schools, Penn State’s Smeal College of Business is among the top 30 in five academic disciplines, and is one of only 15 schools in the nation to place among the top three in at least one area.

IBM And Smeal College To Establish Supply Chain Research Laboratory

The Smeal College of Business at Penn State University and IBM have announced they are creating an On-Demand Supply Chain Research Laboratory at the college. Through a Shared University Research award from IBM, Smeal and IBM are building a computer laboratory that will simulate the workings of a complex supply chain. The laboratory, which will use IBM software, server and storage technology, will open this fall.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has provided initial support of $400,000 to Penn State’s Smeal College of Business for several studies on the performance of small manufacturing firms as part of a five-year grant that could eventually total $3-to-$5 million in cumulative funding.

For the fifth straight year, ChevronTexaco's Patricia Woertz, a 1974 graduate of Penn State's Smeal College of Business, has been named to Fortune magazine's annual list of the "Most Powerful Women in American Business." Smeal College Establishes Memorial Fund In Memory Of Late Faculty Member

Penn State’s Smeal College of Business has established a memorial fund to honor the memory of former faculty member Anthony Verstraete. A member of the Supply Chain and Information Systems Department, Verstraete died on July 16 at the age of 60.
