UNIVERSITY PARK, PA—Dr. Austin J. Jaffe has been awarded the 2002 George Bloom Award from the American Real Estate and Urban Economics Association (AREUEA). Jaffe is Philip H. Sieg Professor of Business Administration, Director of International Programs, and Director of the Institute for Real Estate Studies at Penn State’s Smeal College of Business.
Jaffe accepted the lifetime achievement award during the association’s recent annual meetings in Washington, D.C., and was cited for his long record of contributions in the areas of real estate research, professional service — especially as an active former president of AREUEA — and international conference development.
“Over the years, I’ve devoted a substantial amount of time to AREUEA because I believe in its mission and in the need for more information and analysis in the field,” Jaffe says. “To be recognized with this honor by my peers is quite extraordinary. I look forward to continuing my active role with the association.”
Jaffe has appeared as an invited speaker on property rights issues and real estate financial analysis throughout Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, and Asia, including China, and has appeared at professional programs to present invited papers at more than 100 institutions in more than 25 countries. His teaching and research interests lie in the areas of real estate financial analysis, the economics of property rights, the economic effects of legal institutions, the conceptual basis of property, and real estate computerization. He holds a bachelor of science in real estate and finance, a master of science in finance and a Ph.D. in real estate and finance, all from the University of Illinois.
Named after the late academician and early contributor to the field, George Bloom, of Indiana University, annual selection of the award recipient is based on the recommendations of the AREUEA’s Executive Nomination Committee on behalf of the officers and directors of the association.
