Logistics Professor To Testify Before Congressional Subcommittee
The Subcommittee on National Security, Veterans Affairs, and International Relations has invited John J. Coyle, director of corporate relations for the Center for Supply Chain Research at Penn State, to testify during a hearing examining the Department of Defense business process.
UNIVERSITY PARK, PA-The Subcommittee on National Security, Veterans Affairs, and International Relations has invited John J. Coyle, director of corporate relations for the Center for Supply Chain Research at Penn State, to testify during a hearing examining the Department of Defense business process.
The subcommittee has oversight responsibilities for the Departments of Defense (DOD), State, and Veterans Affairs. The hearing is entitled, "DOD Financial Management: Follow One Item Through the Maze," and is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., Tuesday, June 25, 2002, in Room 2154 Rayburn House Office Building in Washington, DC.
"The subcommittee is interested in understanding the nature of the Department of Defense's financial management difficulties relating to the procurement, accounting, payment, and inventory control of a selected DOD item. The subcommittee would like to learn how innovative best business practices offer the DOD opportunities for making significant improvements to the Department's business operations," says Coyle, emeritus professor of business logistics in the Penn State Smeal College of Business. The Center for Supply Chain Research is a center of excellence in the Penn State Smeal College of Business.
Coyle's testimony will compare the DOD's business practices with those of private industry. He has played an active role in developing the logistics and transportation program at Penn State since joining the faculty in 1961. It is the nation's top-ranked program in its field, according to recent surveys. His many career highlights include 12 college and university awards for outstanding teaching, and receiving the Council of Logistics Management's top honor - the Distinguished Service Award-in 1991. This accolade is emblematic of an individual who has made a significant contribution to the art and science of logistics.
The Center for Supply Chain Research (CSCR) is organized within Smeal College's Division of Research. Founded in 1989, the center is a pre-eminent research community of scholars and practitioners dedicated to shaping practice in logistics and supply chain management in today's converging economies. The center draws upon faculty members from several academic areas as well as from other universities.
