MBAs Experience Global Economy in Weeklong Immersion

In March, first-year students in the Smeal College of Business MBA Program completed their global immersion. They spent a week in one of four locations worldwide—Santiago, Chile; Shanghai, China; New Delhi, India; or San Francisco (for international students)—to get a glimpse of the global economy in action and the challenges and opportunities associated with doing business under different laws, regulations, and customs.

SCNO Engages Students with Nonprofit Organizations

A renewed interest in public service is visible across the country as several national survey results show a rise in volunteer numbers and those working in the nonprofit sector. Applications for AmeriCorps positions have nearly tripled to almost 260,000 in 2010 from about 91,000 in 2008. The number of applicants for Teach for America climbed 32 percent last year to a record of more than 46,000. A recent study conducted by the American Community Survey of the United States Census Bureau showed that in 2009, the number of college students working for nonprofit groups rose 11 percent from the previous year.

Dean Thomas Discusses Tenure as Leader of Smeal

After more than a decade as the leader of two colleges at Penn State, James B. Thomas is returning to the Smeal College of Business faculty. It’s the latest chapter in a Penn State career that began in the early 1970s as a political science undergraduate, resumed in the late 1980s as a junior faculty member in business, and expanded over subsequent years as dean at Smeal and the College of Information Sciences and Technology (IST).

Honor Code Signing Shows Commitment to Academic Integrity at Smeal

Career Fairs Kick Off Fall Recruiting Season at Smeal

With only 500 miles or so between Penn State’s University Park campus and one of the largest MBA career fairs in the nation, more than a third of the students in the Smeal MBA Program decided to pack their bags and set out for Indianapolis in late September. The MBA road-trip was just one of many activities during the month designed to connect corporate recruiters with Smeal College of Business students at all levels seeking internships, co-ops, and full-time opportunities.

Kleintop Family Commits $50,000 for Smeal Trustee Scholarship

Penn State alumnus Jeffrey N. Kleintop and his father, Jeffrey T. Kleintop, have established the Kleintop Family Trustee Scholarship in the Smeal College of Business with a gift of $50,000. By utilizing the University’s Trustee Matching Scholarship Program, this new fund will provide support equivalent to a $100,000 endowment for undergraduates with financial need.

Using Marketing Analytics to Increase Return on Assets

According to research by professors at the Penn State Smeal College of Business, Fortune 1000 companies that increase their use of marketing analytics improve their return on assets (ROA) an average of 8% and as much as 21%, with returns ranging from $70 million to $180 million in net income. Despite the proven value of using marketing analytics, the relative number of companies actually employing them is still low.

Penn State Mourns Alumni Leader and Philanthropist J. Lloyd Huck

Penn State has lost an alumnus whose leadership and philanthropy have helped the University to become a pioneer in the life sciences. J. Lloyd Huck, the retired chairman of the board of pharmaceutical firm Merck & Company and a former chairman of Penn State’s Board of Trustees, died in State College, Pa., this week at the age of 90. With his wife and fellow Class of 1943 member Dorothy Foehr Huck, he established endowments in fields ranging from molecular biology to nutrition, leading to the creation of the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences.
